Oud Europa – Nieuwe wereld I (Aldi 2012.)

In dit schilderij uit 2012 heb ik mezelf afgebeeld als kunstenares die de ziel van twee werelden vertolkt: de oude wereld en de nieuwe wereld.

De eikel is het symbool voor de oude wereld, oftewel het oude Europa waar de Germanen hun rituelen onder de eik pleegden te volvoeren en de Amerikaanse vlag staat hier symbool voor de ‘Nieuwe Wereld’, aangezien Amerika tijdenlang het symbool was voor de nieuwste trends en innovatie.

De raaf staat symbool voor de magische dood, hier bedoeld als onheilsperspectief voor de uitgetelde nieuwe wereld die terugkijkt naar het oude Europa dat haar glans nog steeds bewaart.

Terzijde: ik kijk hier niet zo vrolijk, gezien de geografische afstand tussen mijn dochter, Fontessa, die toen in Californië woonachtig was om te studeren en later enige tijd te werken en mij, terwijl ik juist op dat moment weer even in Europa woonde.

In General:

An acorn as a symbol for ancient Europe. The tribe of the ‘Germans’ used to perform all their rituals under the oak trees.
The American Flag used as a symbol for ‘The New World’, a term used for years to refer to America.
Here, the flag is but a miniature one and made of plastic, so it is being portrayed as unreal.
The artificial black raven stands for a symbol of bad luck or death: he is positioned with his back towards the ‘New World’, looking back at ‘Old Europe’.
In fact, both worlds might go amiss if they don’t take care…

Personal:

The artist has painted herself as the artist expressing the soul of the world.
Her looking not as cheerful was caused by the geographical distance between her – at the time living in Europe – and her daughter –studying and working in California for some time.

En géneral:

Le Gland, fruit du chêne symbolise la “Vieille Europe” depuis la nuit des temps. Les rituels des anciens Allemands avaient toujours lieu sous la frondaison d’ un grand chêne.
Le drapeau américain symbolise le Nouveau Monde, terme qui a été utilisé pendant des décennies pour nommer l’ Amérique. Ici, le drapeau est de petite taille et en matière plastique, c’est un drapeau artificiel.
Le corbeau noir symbolise la malchance où la mort. Il tourne le dos au Nouveau Monde et regarde vers la Vieille Europe. S’ ils n’y prennent pas garde, les deux mondes seront perdus.

Personnel:

L’artiste s’est peinte elle-même comme l’artiste qui exprime l’âme du monde. Si elle n’apparaît pas d’humeur gaie, çela est dû à la distance géographique entr’elle – vivant en Europe à cette époque – et sa fille, qui dans la même période etudiait en Californie et ensuite y a travaillé un certain temps.
